Cutaway Bambach

Order code: BCS

Like the standard Bambach Saddle Seat, the cutaway encourages a healthy sitting posture with all the benefits that go along with having the pelvis and spine in a neutral position. The Cutaway differs however in the fact that the front pommel is slightly narrower. This means that the user has their knees slightly closer together with less abduction of the hips. This is particularly useful for children with a narrower pelvis or more commonly for the child with muscle tightness of the adductor muscles of the inner thigh, which is a common neurological symptom (in particular in children with Spastic Diplegia CP), and may limit the child’s ability to straddle the standard Bambach.

Key features

  • Like the standard Bambach but with a narrower pommel at the front
  • Suitable for children with a narrower pelvis and limited hip abduction
  • Easy clean vinyl covering in a choice of colours
  • Available with an adjustable height stem or gas lift options
  • Manually adjusted tilt mechanism (-5° - +15°)
  • Black Swedish aluminium star base (558mm footprint)
  • Locking castors

Optional extras

  • Back rest
  • Fixed lap belt
  • Trunk harness
  • Height locking bracket

Adjustable height footplate

Order code: AFP

There are often situations when a child will be required to use a stool or sit at a higher work surface. This may be in the home to sit at the dining table for family meals, or in the school environment when participating in lessons such as science, design technology etc., using work benches. For this reason, Bambach have developed an adjustable height footplate. The footplate is fully adjustable in height and can also be rotated 180 degrees to the rear when not required and the seat used as normal. The adjustable height footplate comes with an oversized star base to ensure stability of the seat when using the footplate.

Key features

  • Can be fitted to Bambino, Standard and Cutaway seats with gas lift stems (FGL1-4)
  • Larger 5 star base for greater stability (700mm footprint)
  • Textured non-slip top surface
  • Graduated guide for ease of re-positioning
  • Can be rotated 180 degrees when not needed
  • All locking castors

Fixed height footplate

Order code: FP (single), FT (twin)

Fixed footplates can be fitted to the star base when a child has a slight issue with seat height. These can be built up depending upon the individual needs of the child. A single footplate can also be fitted and is particularly beneficial for users with a leg length discrepancy. A single footplate can also be used to encourage active use of a weaker limb which is common in individuals with Hemiplegia. The base can also be rotated to ensure that the footplates are at the rear when not required.

Key features

  • Available for left foot, right foot or both feet
  • Strong 15mm Birch plywood construction
  • Textured non-slip top surface
  • Stylish footplate profile

Case studies

Rhonda Bates

Age 35
Shoulder and neck pain and breathing difficulty
Rhonda at clerical work using a conventional office seat. Her pelvis is tilted back and her spinal curves lost; her head and neck are distorted from the neutral position. This is a position of postural stress resulting in neck and shoulder pain.

Before using a Bambach

Pain developed in Rhonda’s shoulder and neck, and she had breathing difficulty when she sat. Symptoms were made worse by the sort of fine work that was required by her job, which is carried out in a standing position or seated on a conventional work stool.

Overuse injury was diagnosed by her doctor using X-Ray; it showed a protruding disc at C5. Intensive physiotherapy was undertaken for three weeks but return to work was still too painful and Rhonda was unable to continue. By now her whole life, as well as work, was affected. Driving was difficult and walking and swimming were very uncomfortable. Further physiotherapy included stretches, which began to offer relief. Return to work was gradual and in accordance with a rehabilitation plan.

After using a Bambach

Rhonda consulted the company physiotherapist about her future. She was determined to continue her work and wanted to get back to all of her accustomed activities. She saw the most important part of this as maintaining correct posture when sitting. The physiotherapist recommended the Bambach Saddle Seat as the best way of maintaining a correct posture for work.

At first Rhonda found the Bambach Saddle Seat so different that she spent some time getting used to it. The adjustability of the seat was critical in her finally getting comfortable. The tilt, height and back adjustments were all re-adjusted time and again as she found her correct position. The seat has been successful in preventing a recurrence of her symptoms. While attending lectures to obtain her occupational health and safety diploma, Rhonda had to sit in classroom seats, and the symptoms returned. She then said she realised that the Bambach Saddle Seat had given her an understanding of correct posture, and she said that she now evaluates all seating, and her own posture, in comparison with the Bambach Saddle Seat, which is her benchmark, to avoid a return of the symptoms that affect her life so seriously.

Carolyn Johnson

Age 33
Severe spasm and pain of neck muscles resulting from compression fracture of C6
Carolyn in her Bambach Saddle Seat. Postural stress is relieved. Her pelvis is now stable in a neutral position, her shoulder girdle relaxed. Her head and neck are in a neutral position, her thighs each side of the trunk taking some weight. She has an easy view of her screen.

Before using a Bambach

Carolyn has experienced severe pain and spasm of the neck muscles, often accompanied by a burning sensation and ‘grinding pain’ in the neck region. These symptoms are worse when sitting at her computer. Carolyn has suffered a compression fracture of C6. This damage is a cumulative result of riding, training, showing and managing horses. Carolyn has been working with horses for the past 18 years. Now an independent professional horse trainer (five years) she also has a burden of office work, producing her accounts records by herself sitting at computer for up to five hours at the end of a work day. Carolyn’s horsetraining enterprise sees her at work at 6.00 am, and she may not finish till 8.00 pm.

Her constant pain causes depression and adds stress to all aspects of her life. Chiropractic treatment brought great relief of symptoms and allowed Carolyn to continue to work as a horse trainer. However, she continued to suffer pain and muscle spasm of the neck and shoulders when working at her computer on her conventional, office-style seat.

After using a Bambach

Carolyn was ‘willing to try anything to get relief from the constant pain’. She was introduced to the Bambach Saddle Seat and was instructed on how the Saddle Seat changes seated position from one that produces postural stress to one that allows natural spinal alignment. She was shown how to adjust the seat for pelvic tilt and seat height. This involves assessing the height of the work surface, the angle and position of the keyboard and the monitor to determine the ideal height of the seat for best posture.

Carolyn reports that, when sitting on the Bambach Saddle Seat, her neck muscles do not go into spasm. “This allows my neck vertebrae to stay in place, allows me to sit properly at the computer when I have to work for hours, without my neck muscles going into spasm and with no burning feeling or pain. The Bambach Saddle Seat allows me to sit properly when I have to work at my computer”

Robert Lamacchia

Age 26
Posture related neck pain, back pain, and headaches
Robert in his conventional, flat musician’s seat. His pelvis is rotating backwards, flattening his lumbar curve; his abdominals are inactive, and he has poor head, neck and shoulder posture. He has to lean forward from the waist. His work requires quite a lot of rotation across a fixed pelvis, which causes pain and stress.

Before using a Bambach

Robert suffers from poor posture due to standing at work. He is a tall man and the standard work bench is too low for good working posture. He was suffering severe neck and back pain. At home, he sits at a keyboard playing and composing music, and he realised that this was aggravating his symptoms. When he started to suffer continuous headaches and was having problems at work due to these symptoms, Robert suspected that his posture was the cause and that his seating was contributing to the problem.

After using a Bambach

After trying the Bambach Saddle Seat in a showroom, he took one on trial. A Saddle Seat consultant visited his home to advise him on his position at the keyboard. The keyboard had to be heightened, as did the monitor.

Robert said that, as soon as he sat down on the Bambach Saddle Seat, he felt comfortable with no pain. His pain now only comes from the kitchen work. The result for Robert is that he feels more creative and is more productive. His headaches are gone and he reports that he enjoys his music more. Robert says “The Saddle Seat has given me a better lifestyle and posture. It has saved my back I was having regular massage, but now I only go sometimes. I realised that at my age if I did not do something soon I would have a severe problem later”.

Ruth Rennick

Age 30's
Above knee amputation
Ruth using crutches, attempting to perform kitchen tasks. It is obviously very difficult, with a high casualty rate for plates and a high stress level for Ruth and her family. Cooking this way was dangerous as well as extremely difficult.

Before using a Bambach

Trauma to her right leg due to a motorbike accident in 1995 resulted in an above-knee amputation for Ruth. With a continuing series of unsatisfactory prostheses, Ruth was only mobile using two crutches. Standing for any length of time was impossible; carrying anything, or moving things around the house, was a logistical exercise. All her usual tasks in caring for a husband and three school children, as well as returning to work, were difficult or impossible.

After using a Bambach

As part of her return to work rehabilitation program, Ruth was offered a range of work stools. Only one was successful – the Bambach Saddle Seat supplied on loan by an occupational therapist.

Using the Bambach Saddle Seat, Ruth could work, as she could now get close to the counter. But her family life was so difficult she left work and took the Saddle Seat home, where it made a great difference. Ruth now has independence and mobility around the kitchen. She can prepare meals, move items around the kitchen and onto the table without having to ask for help. Even removing a roast from the oven is quite safe using the Bambach Saddle Seat.

The resulting independence is extremely important to Ruth. She has a prosthesis, and even though this is quite satisfactorily fitted, it is a relief to remove it at times, or to get a few things done before putting it on. When Ruth was in Sydney for the fitting of a new limb, she was so lost without the Bambach Saddle Seat that she hired one from the company for her six week stay.

A further benefit for Ruth is the fact that, when sitting on the Bambach Saddle Seat, her stump is not in 900 continuous flexion as it is in a wheelchair or conventional seat. This prevents the flexion contraction, which can often prevent successful use of a prosthesis.
